Connection errors

ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED

Your device is not connected to the internet.

Quick answer

The browser could not use any network. The website is not the problem; your device lost its connection.

When to wait: If your provider has an outage, you need to wait for it to end.

If you are visiting the website

  1. Reconnect Turn Wi-Fi on, or plug in the network cable. Turn off airplane mode.
    Windows
Click the network icon at the right end of the taskbar. Turn Wi-Fi on, pick your network and make sure Airplane mode is off.
    macOS
Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, turn Wi-Fi on and choose your network.
    Android
Swipe down from the top, turn on Wi-Fi or Mobile data and turn off Airplane mode.
    iPhone and iPad (iOS)
Open Control Center, turn on Wi-Fi or Cellular and turn off Airplane Mode.
  2. Check the cable or the signal Make sure the network cable clicks into place at both ends. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router; walls and floors weaken the signal.
  3. Restart your router Turn your router off, wait about 30 seconds and turn it on again. This renews your connection and its address lookup.
  4. Check your VPN A VPN that dropped can block all traffic until it reconnects. Disconnect it in its app to test, then connect again.
  5. Forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network A stored network profile can go stale, for example after the router was replaced. Forgetting it and joining again creates a fresh one; you need the Wi-Fi password.
    Windows
Start > Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Select the network, click Forget, then reconnect with the password.
    macOS
Turn Wi-Fi off and on in the menu bar, then choose the network again and enter the password if asked.
    Android
Settings > Network & internet > Internet, tap the gear next to the network and choose Forget. Menu names vary by phone maker.
    iPhone and iPad (iOS)
Settings > Wi-Fi > tap (i) next to the network > Forget This Network, then join again.
  6. Reset network settings (last resort) Use this only when other devices on the same network work and this one does not. Saved networks are removed.
    Windows
Start > Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. After the restart you may need to set up VPN software again.
    Android
    Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
    iPhone and iPad (iOS)
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Is it the website or me?

This one is on your side. The browser saw that your device has no usable network at all, so it did not even try to contact the website. Every other site will fail too until the connection is back.

How it differs from DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET

ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED means the device itself reports no network connection. DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET means Chrome tested the way out and found none, even though a network may be connected. The first points to Wi-Fi, cable or airplane mode, the second more often to the router or provider.

Quick test with your phone

Turn on the hotspot on your phone and connect the computer to it. If websites load, the computer is fine and your home network is the cause. If they still fail, look at the computer's network adapter and settings.

Common questions

My phone works on mobile data but the laptop is offline. Why?

Mobile data is a separate connection. The laptop depends on your Wi-Fi or cable, so the router or the laptop's network adapter is where to look.

Does this error mean my computer has a virus?

Almost never. It is the normal message for a missing connection. Check Wi-Fi, cables and airplane mode first.

Will a network reset delete my files?

No files are deleted. Saved Wi-Fi networks and their passwords are removed, and VPN software may need to be set up again.

Why does the error appear for a moment and then go away?

Your device briefly lost its connection, for example while Wi-Fi reconnected or the laptop woke from sleep. If it happens often, check the signal strength or the router.

Likely causes

  • Common Wi-Fi is off or disconnected. (Your side)
  • Sometimes Airplane mode is on or the cable is unplugged. (Your side)
