About YouTube problems

YouTube problems can show up as videos that buffer, stop or show a playback error, while the homepage itself still loads. Ad blockers and other extensions can interfere with the YouTube player, and Chrome can use the QUIC protocol to reach Google services, so a QUIC error can point to the network path rather than to YouTube being down. Check first whether videos play in a private window without extensions and on another network.

How this check works

  • One measurement location (single-self-hosted-probe), not a worldwide test.
  • We read only the response headers of the HTTPS homepage; page content and features are not tested.
  • We follow at most 5 HTTPS redirects and check every new address again.
  • The whole check stops after 10 seconds.
  • Results are reused for 60 seconds; this page refreshes its saved check at most every 10 minutes.

Typical YouTube problems

An editorial list of typical problems, not based on live user reports.

General fixes: Video and streaming

  1. Lower the video quality Pick a lower quality in the player settings. If playback then runs smoothly, your connection is too slow or unstable for the higher quality right now.
  2. Test without extensions Open the video in a private window, where most extensions are off. Ad blockers and privacy tools can interfere with video players.
  3. Restart the app or device On TVs, consoles and streaming sticks, close the app completely or restart the device. This clears a stuck player without changing any settings.
  4. Compare with another device Try the same video on your phone with mobile data. If it plays there, the problem is your home network or the first device, not the service.
